The Contented Mind

HOPE YOU SAW THIS

Lots has been said and written about Ernie Harwell the last few days.  He was the sound of summer for so many of us.

I hope you saw this from the Free Press:

“A spiritual man, Mr. Harwell quoted from the Bible as easily as he talked about sports.”

Martin Luther wrote about the First Commandment, “You shall have no other gods,” that we should fear, love and trust in God above ALL things.  Looks like, for as much as he loved baseball, Ernie Harwell understood that.

Hmmm…  what do you love in life?  How does that your knowledge of that compare to your knowledge of the Bible?

NOW YOU FEEL GUILTY?

I did not mean for the former to make you feel guilty.  I just wanted to catch your imagination.  What would it take to know the Bible to the same degree you know about other things?

The thing that was even more striking about ‘The Voice of Summer’ was that he had great faith in his blood bought salvation in Christ.  It was assurance of God’s love in Jesus that led to his devotion in life and his peace in death.

Keep this upper most in your mind:  even though you’ll NEVER love God as you should, he has already loved you with an everlasting love in Christ.  Everlasting.  Let his love, not your guilt, lead you to greater devotion in life and peace in the prospect of death.

CONTENTMENTISM

The operating life principle for Christians in their relationship with the earth is “contentmentism.”  Paul wrote, “If we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.”  He also wrote, “Godliness with contentment is great gain.  For we brought nothing into this world and can take nothing out of it.”

The ability for Christians to live well in this world, to live in a way that properly rules over the earth and subdues it, grows out of a spirit of contentment.  Greed, discontent and envy account for much of the befouling of the earth.  Keep these ideas in your contented mind:

Loanedness:  Every thing we have has only been loaned to us by God.  It is all his; it is not ours.  We should use this earth carefully because it belongs to Another.
Responsibility:  We must be actively engaged in properly caring for the created world because God told us to.  See Genesis 1: 27-28.  Christians may not sit on the environmental sidelines.
Community:  We should always live with an awareness of how our action or inaction impacts others.  We should especially be sensitive toward unbelievers.  We are in this together.

Don"t forget Mother’s Day!  Take good care of Mom.  Lift up a prayer of thanks for her - whether she is here or in heaven.
