Prayer

PRAYER

On any list of topics people want to hear about more in sermons near the top is the topic of prayer.  People want to know how to pray better, more effectively.

Here is the key to a successful prayer life: pray.

- Pray in the name of Jesus—it is only because of him that we have any right to prayer.
- Pray only to God.
- Pray with a trusting heart.

Don’t worry about getting all the words perfect when you pray.  Don’t worry about having all the theology just right either.  Pray.

Look at all the things that are going on around us.  Look at the responsibilities of the President ant the Governor.  Look at what’s going on with home foreclosures and gas prices.  Look at what’s going on with families in crisis.  Pray.

Consider our congregation.  We have a mighty job to do.  We need to reach people in our community and in the world who are on their way to hell.  They need to be rescued.  We need to care for one another within the congregation being kind and helpful to all.  We have a mortgage to cover, a program to fund, and bills to pay.  Pray.

Check out your own life.  Boy, do you have a lot of things that need help.  You have things to do, people to see, places to go.  You have financial obligations.  You have family members who need your love—some of whom are easier to love than others.  You have health and emotional concerns.  Pray.

Notice the world.  See the beauty of spring.  Smell the fragrance of flowers.  Taste the flavor of the first outdoor steak.  Hear the chirpings of the birds.  Feel the energy of the Sun’s rays.  Wow.  Pray.

SPEAKING OF PRAYER

Come, spend some time in prayer at St. Luke on Thursday, May 1, between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. as we participate in the National Day of Prayer.

Simply come into the sanctuary, find a place by yourself and lift up your prayers to God.  In addition to the things above there will be prayer lists available.

Please note:  we are going to hold the Prayer Vigil inside the Worship Center.  Looks like it will be too cold to use the Outdoor Worship Center.

Do you have to come to the church to participate in this?  Of course not, but I think you will find that it helps.

ONE MORE THING

In the sermon Sunday I mentioned that there is a difference between what is FUN and what is GOOD.  I did not suggest that we should never have FUN.  I did suggest that when the two compete, we should choose what is GOOD over what is FUN.

In his first epistle Peter calls us to focus on living such a GOOD life that people around us notice that we march to a different drummer and that they want to know that drummer’s name.

His name is Jesus.

Say, don’t forget as our busy schedules get even busier, if you are not able to worship on Sunday, we are now offering our 633 Service on Monday nights.  (It starts at 6:33.)
