Missing Treasure

NOT ALONE

I spent a few days this week fulfilling some responsibilities with our Michigan District Board of Directors.  Our District consists of nearly 400 congregations with a total of 250,000 members.

And that’s just our Lutheran Christian brothers and sisters!

We are not alone!

It is good to be reminded that we are part of a larger band of believers laboring together in the Lord’s vineyard.  Check out I Kings 19:13-18.

ALONE

There are times that it is good to be alone ... with God.

We are busy.  There are people swarming all around us.  The TV is on.  Music blares from a CD.  The computer screen flickers.

Turn it all off.  Step aside.  Spend some time alone ...  with God.

Check out Matthew 14:23.

HOW’S IT GOING?

Many of you, many of you(!) have committed to being in the Word throughout this year.

How is it going?  How can I help?  What have you found interesting?

Check out John 8:31-32.

BIBLE TREASURE HUNT

If you missed the clues in this week’s announcement, here they are.  Get the kids involved!

Clue 1: May have been a Thursday night streaker; or, what you make when you can’t write; Clue 2: Days water flooded the earth for Noah, plus 6, minus fish Jesus had the disciples catch for breakfast on the shore, plus sons of Jacob, minus the square root of 9. Clue 3: 10 times NASCAR’s Big E (and take the next verse too).

MISSING TREASURE

When we think about all the things that God brings us in Jesus, we forget that a great part of what God brings us is “a missing” that is indeed a treasure.

Compare Luke 4:18-19 with Isaiah 61:1-2.  Notice where Jesus stops.  He misses the part about “and the day of vengeance of our God,”

That’s the point.  Jesus came so that all who believe in him as Christ might miss the day of vengeance of our God- the condemnation on Judgment Day.  What a treasure to miss that!

Check out Romans 8:1.

DON’T MISS

This Sunday (January 31) after our 11:00 service we will hold a Voters’ Assembly meeting.  At the meeting, among other things, we will:

Provide an opportunity to nominate people for Synodical President and Vice President,
Hear an update of the coming capital campaign Growing Further in Faith, and
Consider a State of the Congregation report.

Keep warm.

(This is a good time to donate blankets or coats or sweaters to the various agencies in our community that help people in need.  Thanks to those who lead our coat bank.)
