How is Yours Going?

HOW IS YOURS GOING?

This week Sunday Aaron Schellhas will be ordained into the Office of the Public Ministry in Illinois.  Next Sunday, June 15, in our 11:00 service Michael Henn will be ordained as well.  Both of these young men (and their wives!) are committing themselves to a life of intentional ministry for the Lord Jesus Christ.

You too?  While you might not be a pastor, as a Christian you too are called to a life of intentional ministry.  Your ministry may not include the public administration of the Word and Sacraments, but as a Christian you are none the less to be a full time servant of Jesus. How’s your ministry going?

SUMMER READING

What is on your reading list this summer?

Our Thursday men’s group is reading What’s So Great about Christianity.  So far so good.  The book serves as a rebuttal of recent popular “angry atheist” books such as Christopher Hitchens’ God is Not Great.  I am also working my way through a (way too) long book Dawn to Decadence.  This book begins with the Reformation and works through cultural, scientific, religious and artistic developments (or degradations) to the present to help us understand our current cultural pickle.  I continue to be on course with the “read through the Bible” commitment.  That’s what’s on my list.  Maybe I should add a little light reading, too.

How about you?  Reading is a powerful experience.  Have you heard this before?  “Readers lead and leaders read.” You and I need to be leaders for Jesus in our homes, community and workplace.  Reading, especially the Bible, will transform us into ever more effective leaders in Jesus.

Special note about the kids:  one of the best things you can do for an important young person in your life is teach him to love to read.  (Another good thing to do with your kids is have dinner with them every night.  But that’s another point for another time.) As school lets out, kids are better off with their nose in a book than with a remote in their hands.

If you read something you really like this summer, write me a note about it—kind of a brief “Cliff Notes.”

GOD IS GOOD!

As spring is turning into summer, are you seeing the wonderful goodness of God?

As you celebrate Confirmations, Graduations and other milestones, are you seeing the wonderful goodness of God?

As you attend weddings or celebrate anniversaries, are you seeing the wonderful goodness of God?

As you endure difficult times and face uncertain prospects, are you seeing the wonderful goodness of God?

The wonderful goodness of God is all around us!  Let’s give him thanks and praise!

(If you are having trouble for whatever reason seeing the wonderful goodness of God, look at the cross.)

FRIENDLY COMPETITION

The Bible encourages us to engage in a little friendly competition:  strive to outdo one another in love and good works.  (Hebrews 10:24) On your mark, get set, go!

(I talked about this in a sermon I preached last week when I was away fulfilling some duties for the District.  Might mention something on it this Sunday.)
